You choose ! Start at the published time, and go as long as you dare !
BLACKOUT LITE : 5 MINUTES
You want to show your support,
but you've got supper to make, so it can't take too long.
BLACKOUT VIGIL : 1 HOUR
You want to take the time
to sit and meditate with a candle and make the phones stop ringing
and the TV stop blaring for a while.
BLACKOUT PARTY : 3 HOURS
You and your mates and your family want to have
snacks by candlelight and a couple of glasses of organic beer together and talk
about the state of the world and where we're heading with BLACKOUT BRITAIN.
BLACKOUT HIPPY : 24 HOURS
You've given yourself the challenge of living without heating and lighting
and electrical power for a whole day and a whole night. You are a complete
planetophile, no mistake, and you wear a deep green halo.
You must prepare

SWITCHING OFF
This is our absolute best tried-and-tested advice for reducing
your Energy use and Cutting the Carbon.
(a) Replace your old-school incandescent lightbulbs with compact
fluorescent lightbulbs. Australia and California are set
to ban the old-school ones, because they are so wasteful !
(b) Turn down the heating. Every single degree can save shedloads
on the bills and avoid further famine and drought in hotter parts of
the world.
(c) Switch to green electricity if you pay the bill. Power from wind
and wave is going to be our main source of energy in future, so support
it now and watch it grow.
(d) Wrap up the house, and wrap up yourself. Plug up gaps in windows
and doors, and if you're a house owner, get the wall cavities filled
and the roof insulation rolled out.
(e) Travel less. Less is definitely more. More freedom. More green.
Most journeys by car are less than 5 miles in length. Try walking
instead. Or cycling. Or if you are alternatively abled, take the
bus.
(f) Turn everything off when it's not in use. Take the black cube
transformers and chargers out of the wall. Make sure all the red
standby lights go out because you've unplugged at the wall. Turn off
computers at night, or if you have to leave them on for some reason,
at least turn off the screen monitor, which will save half the power.
(g) In summer, use natural ventilation instead of air conditioning.
(h) If you buy new electrical appliances, buy energy-efficient models.
(i) Do your Carbon Footprint to measure your progress.
(j) Borrow or buy a power meter to check the efficiency of your
freezer, refrigerator and other machines, and help you find out where
you can make further changes.
