Over 90% of our Energy comes from burning Fossil Fuels, which adds
extra Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. This is more than the plants
and seas can soak up. There is more Carbon Dioxide in the air now than
at any time in the
last 800,000 years.
This is highly dangerous, because the extra Carbon Dioxide in the air
is soaking up the heat of the Sun, and is making the Earth heat up.
This is called Global Warming.
This is having a big impact on the weather and wind systems, and we are
seeing weird and worrying changes in the seasons and rainfall. This is
called Climate Change, and makes life very hard for plants and animals.
It also affects human societies.
The scientists who look at Climate Change science say that we need
to make a global cut of 60% on average in our use of coal, oil and gas.
Nations that use the most Energy should Cut the Carbon more than
the average.
This means that the United Kingdom should consider a cut in the
region of 90% in our use of Fossil Fuels.
We need to change our Carbon-based Energy for non-Carbon Energy.
To take the Carbon out of Energy, we need to make some very great
changes in the way we heat our buildings and power our machines.
We have to change our Energy systems almost completely, and we
have to have totally different sources of Energy. Replacing our
Energy infrastructure is going to be costly, but we need to do it.
We need to be spending 200 times, maybe 2000 times, more on
new, sustainable, Renewable Energies than we do now.
However, it takes time to build Renewable Energy resources, just as
it takes time to make energy systems more efficient. The only thing
we can do straight away is cut our use of energy.
We can do that personally, at home. We can do that politically, in
our local Borough, our work place, our local hospital, our community
centre, our place of worship.
When the disastrous impacts of Climate Change start to seriously
impact the World's Economies, it will be too late to protect our
standard of living as food and water supplies will be at risk.
While we still have a choice, we can ask ourselves and our local
community to Cut the Carbon and BLACKOUT LONDON.
We have to show leadership and Cut the Carbon as individuals,
for ourselves.
We can turn out the lights, switch off machines on standby, turn
off unused electrical appliances, turn down the thermostat and wear
a woolly jumper at home.
Climate Change starts at home, but it doesn't end there.
We can write to our local councillors and Members of Parliament and
ask for energy sanity in public life.
We can form local campaign groups to influence businesses, public
offices and facilities to control and reduce energy use.
A dark city can be a safe city.
A FEW NUMBERS TO CRUNCH
The United Kingdom is directly responsible for 2% of the World's
Carbon Dioxide emissions, but 15% of global Carbon pollution is
produced by companies listed on the London Stock Exchange,
according to nef the New Economics Foundation.
Traffic Jams ? There are too many cars on the roads.
Open Freezers ? The supermarkets are making a profit while they
waste astonishing amounts of Energy.
Retail Therapy ? The transport and sale of consumer goods in
Britain racks up our Carbon debt as well as our personal debt.
Lighting Up ? Electrical products shine their little red lights,
powering the Standby Nation, and boiling the Planet at the same time.
STOP Shopping. STOP Flying. STOP Wasting. STOP Burning Carbon.
